20TH ANNIVERSARY OF NEAR MELTDOWN AT THREE MILE ISLAND

THREE MILE ISLAND, Penn. (Wireless Flash) -- March 28 is a date that should "melt" the hearts of anti-nuclear activists: it's the 20th anniversary of the day the reactor at the Three Mile Island nuclear plant almost underwent a meltdown. Two days after the accident, the Pennsylvania governor asked pregnant women to leave the area -- but most locals didn't stress over the near meltdown. In fact, some made money selling souvenirs to lookieloo tourists -- including T-shirts that read "A Little Nukie Never Hurt Anyone." But one local farmer, Jane Lee, claims that immediately after the near meltdown, the mosquito population disappeared and there was a marked increase of birth defects and stillborn births in farm animals within three miles of Three Mile Island. The Pennsylvania chapter of No Nukes will hold a "20th Anniversary Demonstration" beginning at 3:53 a.m.: the exact time the malfunction began.
